- In a small bowl, dissolve sugar in lukewarm water. Sprinkle yeast on top and let stand for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.
- Combine bread flour and salt in a large bowl. Create a well in the center.
- Pour yeast mixture and olive oil (or melted butter) into the flour well. Mix using a wooden spoon or dough hook until just combined.
- Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic, or knead using a stand mixer with dough hook for 6 to 8 minutes.
- Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for 1 to 1.5 hours until doubled in size.
- Punch down dough, shape into a loaf, and place in a greased 9x5-inch loaf pan. Cover and let rise for 30 to 40 minutes until slightly above pan rim.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until crust is golden brown and loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
- Allow bread to cool in pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
